Ever wondered how you can skip the long line at TSA and get in the faster TSA Pre or even the line at customers after a long international flight? There are a few different ways to get into the faster lines, one is called TSA Precheck and is $75 but another version that will also get you through customs quicker is called Global Entry. It’s the next big thing to make your travels simpler, here’s how it all works.
How Does It Work?
When coming back into the States, travelers who have Global Entry will be able to go straight to the Global Entry kiosk, the machine will read your passport, you’ll place your fingertips on the scanner for verification, and complete a customs declaration. The kiosk will then issue you a transaction receipt and direct you to baggage claim and the exit. And that’s it, you’re done. It also makes you eligible for TSA Precheck so you can get through security much quicker.
How Do I Get It?
First you have to apply online here and pay a $100 fee (but don’t worry it’ll keep you eligible for 5 years). Then after your application is reviewed, you’ll receive a message asking you to schedule an interview at one of the Global Entry Enrollment Centers. Your interview determines your eligibility for the program, it consists of questions, a photo being taken and a collection of biometric information (scanning your fingerprints). At the interview make sure to bring your valid passport and another form of identification (i.e. driver’s license). And after a few months you’ll hopefully be approved!
How Do The Airlines Know?
On most airlines its called “Known Traveler Number/ID” and you can enter your number after picking your flights. The box is located where you fill out your passenger information, enter your number here so the airline can designate you as a participant in Global Entry, this way you can enter that TSA Recheck line and get through security much quicker or when returning to the country avoid the long lines at customs.
