2013 Daytona 500 Preview
With drivers and race fans getting revved up for the Daytona 500 this week, their excitement simply means that racing season is here. As always, Daytona will serve as the kick-off event for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this year and it is expected, like usual, to be one of the biggest and most-watched races of the season. However, this year something already unexpected has happened, but it will almost assuredly make the 2013 “Great American Race” one of the most watched NASCAR events in history.
Danica Patrick is used to making waves and making history, so it’s no surprise that she did it again over the weekend, but needless to say, she impressed NASCAR fans everywhere and her peers when she became the first woman to win the pole at the Daytona 500 during Sunday’s qualifier. Securing the top spot for one of racing’s biggest events is arguably the biggest achievement in her young career.
“I’ve been lucky enough to make history, be the first woman to do many things, Patrick told reporters. “I really just hope that I don’t stop doing that. We have a lot more history to make. We are excited to do it.”
Of course, owning the pole – even in a big event such as the Daytona 500 – doesn’t guarantee victory, especially against a stacked field of the best stock-car drivers in the world. Among the other qualifiers on Sunday were Jeff Gordon (2nd), Tony Stewart (5th), Denny Hamlin (7th), and defending champion Matt Kenseth (10th). Stewart will be gunning for his 19th victory at Daytona International Speedway, but for his first in the Daytona 500.
